This shot shows parts of a wall and the ceiling of the foyer in the new Triangle Tower in Cologne. I wondered how I could manage to create an image connected to the name Triangle and took a lot of shots during the official opening event of the building. The movable LCD screen of my Olympus E-330 camera was very helpful here especially when taking shots directed to the ceiling: no "head-into-the-neck-positions" were necessary :-) The wall with the letters will be displayed and explained in one of my next posts.

This image was taken on a Jewish cemetery near Bonn, hidden in a small forest not far from a flood protection embankment of the river Rhine. I discovered the place during a bicycle tour just by accident and took some photos. Impressive to see how old the graves must be if you look at the standpoint of the tree!

This one is for Ginnie (and Heidi) to show the before and after effect when altering an image with HDR technique.

The subject is the Oberbaumbrücke (Oberbaum bridge) in Berlin that connects the western and eastern part of Berlin. The bridge was completely renovated after Germany's reunification and shows one floor (the upper one) for underground trains and another one for cars and pedestrians.

One of the most imposing parts of Madeira is the north coast of the island. Parts of the old coast street (called "Antiqua") can still be used as a one-way-road. As you can see it's not a road for cabriolets because there are several waterfalls directly ending on the street.

This is the last set of Levada images. This Levada was on the south side of the island at an altitude of about 1400 m. The images show that we were as high as the clouds and you also can see the the ocean in the background.

The Levadas are one of the most impressive constructions you can visit on the island of Madeira. Following their ways leads you through different landscape scenes and often offers amazing views into dark green valleys, down to the Atlantic Ocean, into caves, let you smell the flavour of eucalyptus woods, let you hear the sound of water falls ... and so on. The image in the middle shows that it could be helpful to have some rain protecting clothes with you during the walks.

Back Again

Back again from a two weeks Madeira vacation. A number of photos were taken during the stay but we weren't really lucky with the weather. It was not so warm as expected and the sun didn't shine as often as it was necessary to make really good images. Often it was cloudy and very windy - not the best circumstances for photographing. But the island is very interesting and offers a lot of different landscapes. It has a most impressive coast line and a lot of forests to discover. The most amazing things are the "Levadas", the small but very long water channels that you can find everywhere on Madeira. These Levadas were built in the early decades (up to the fifties) of the last century to bring water from the "wet" north to the "dry" south. Along the Levadas you can walk through most wonderful landscape sceneries. More of this - illustrated with photos - next week and later. Today just a macro shot of a thistle bloom found during one of our walks. More Madeira typical images will follow soon :-)

Bye bye For A While

With these two images taken some days ago when some of the rare sun rays fell on the back of Amarylis petals I say good bye for the next three weeks. If the condition of one of my near relatives - who experienced a scaring attack on her health last Sunday - stabilizes more (and it seems as if it will go this lucky way), we will leave for a vacation on Tuesday morning. The island of Madeira is our aim and I hope to return with a sack (means: Compact Flash Cards ;-) full of images. Don't forget me in the meantime ;-)

What you can see here is the wall of a prison tower from the 16th century at the bank of the river Rhine in a village called Unkel. On the wall different flood level marks are fixed. The photo is postprocessed by altering/balancing different color levels.

Reflecting Mirrors

This mirror surface was placed as a decorative element in a furniture design exhibition last month. At first glance I wondered about the different reflections the mirrors show ... but a look at the second (bottom) image offers the solution.

Btw, I manipulated the upper image in a graphic program. Can you discover what I did and imagine why? :-)
P.S. Manipulation has nothing to do with the guy in the mirrors (who is NOT me).

Faced

Near our home you can see this "faced" building that contains a transformer for our settlement. Until last autumn it was covered by a big number of different plants so that the face like design of the building wasn't very well viewable. But at the moment the facial features are good noticeble, even that there are "ears" :-)

Here you can see three macro shots of different types of Smart cars (Link to the official Smart Company site : Smart ). These cars are about 3.5 cm in length and can be found in socalled "Surprise Eggs". These eggs are very popular here in Germany and the content of the eggs were collected by numerous people. There are collecting catalogues available as well as there is a big auction scene. Look HERE for more information.

In a corner not directly visible from the showroom I found these decoration elements. Natural light came from the left side through a glass front and from some windows in the hall roof. Some artificial lights caused the warm color tone coming from the right side. Additional color adjustment was also done at the PC.

Amaryllis

Today I took some time for post processing experimentation. The Amaryllis shots didn't turn out how I expected so I had to adjust the color tone to a darker red and to replace a bumpy background with the black one. Sharpness and clarity is still not how it should be but the photo doesn't offer more. I learned how important it is to have the proper light for shots like this. In this case I disabled the camera flash and used two halogen lamps which surely are totally wrong here because they caused an unnatural color tone. It seems as if I have to extend my equipment at least with some professional photo lights. Any suggestions? :-)

This image was taken in autumn 2003 in the Austrian alps with my Canon G5 digital camara which was just two months old at that time. The photo was posted sucessfully to another photo community and is still one of my personal favourites.

The Sleeping Whale

That's the nickname for a building in Köln (English exonym: Cologne), created by the star architect Renzo Piano opened in 2005. It's a department store of "Peek & Cloppenburg" in the city centre of Köln not too far away from the Kölner Dom (Cathedral of Cologne). Nearly 5.000 m2 arched glass fascade and a unique shape characterizes this building. Unfortunately I couldn't rent a helicopter to take photos that show the complete building, but look HERE
for more detailed info on the building (in English language). Two of the photos below show the spectacular technique for fixing the glass facade.

I decided to post the image below to let us view a little contrast to what we can see in nature these days in the European time zone. The image shows an oil painting that hangs on a wall in one of our rooms at home. It was created by a friend (M. Huessen) some years ago. We purchased it during an exhibition held together with a number of further local artists of the Ruhrgebiet area in Germany.

This stone surely isn't accustomed to such a weather like this. The stone lies on our balcony and has a weight of more than 40 kg. It's a "souvenir" from the Island of Elba and knows only sun and water but no frost or snow. But is that really correct ... maybe ages ago the stone experienced much more roughness like today ... :-)
